Rooftop Bar Rundown
A sampling of DC’s rooftop bars… for times when the days just keep going on and on.
I love a good bar as much as the next average twenty-something, but I have to admit that sometimes the congested, shoulder-to-shoulder, stifling atmosphere can elicit a wee bit of claustrophobia. If you’re like me, a rooftop bar that comes with natural breezes and enough urban air to go around is sometimes a welcome alternative. Below are four DC spots that feature Rooftop bars from the down-home to the ritzy and in between.
El Centro D.F.
*Note that this review is for the restaurant’s U Street location.
If a stellar view of the city is a top priority for your rooftop boozing experience, then, to be honest, El Centro D.F. is not your spot. However, if looking for a lively open-air deck, a good deal, and a margarita, head to this U street Mexican Restaurant. Their deck has a super casual vibe, with its tin roof, wood floors, and dangling paper lights. Not to mention their pretty decent happy hour specials featuring all the Mexican cuisine familiar favorites.
On a warm, breezy, summer evening, you really can’t beat Local 16. The ceiling-less bar has standing room for mingling and dancing or tables along the back if you’d rather hang on the sidelines. The great ambiance, tasty snacks to share, and standup service combine to form a real rooftop gem.
The good news about The Brixton is that its rooftop bar has a respectable view of the city skyline. The bad news is that you may not be able to see it among the hordes of people who frequent this popular spot. If you’re going to enjoy the view, Friday and Saturday night may not be your best bet. When you go, don’t settle for your classic rail drink. Make it spicy with their Snakebite or London Calling cocktails.
On the top floor of The W, one of D.C.’s most posh hotels, high above the smoggy city air, sits the swanky P.O.V. bar. With the striking cityscape and dangerously delicious cocktails, its no wonder P.O.V. is a hotspot for the District’s political elite. To enjoy the W hotel’s bar in all its glory, save up some cash, dress to impress, and put a little extra sass in your step.
