Old U Street is mixed with new U Street as new buildings are slowly developing. Shiny apartment buildings and shopping centers take up a few streets and blocks but the history of U Street still remains.

A statue of Duke Ellington and a statue to remember African Americans that served in the Civil War can be found on U Street as well as shopping areas, markets and coffee shops.

A recent shopping building on the corner of 9th Street NW and U Street, includes Compass Coffee, Warby Parker, Glen’s Garden Market, and clothing stores. The area is very hip and trendy.
