As the wonderful eight days of Hanukkah begin on Tuesday, December 16th, you may be wondering where you could get some great kosher (or non-kosher) food for the holiday. Surprisingly, many restaurants, even non-Jewish ones, in and around DC not only have good non-Kosher choices but also several items on their menus that conform to kashrut, the Jewish dietary law. Here is our list of the best places to dine in or order delicious takeout on Hanukkah:
Max’s Kosher Café – An entirely kosher restaurant that has all of your Jewish food favorites. From Mediterranean shawarma and falafel to delicious deli sandwiches and soups, Max’s Kosher Café has everything you would need to enjoy a delightful meal on Hanukkah! If you visit the restaurant’s website, you can also order takeout platters or even catering for larger parties! Located at 2319 University Blvd. W, Wheaton, MD 30902.
The Kosher Pastry Oven Restaurant and Bakery – This elegant and one-of-a-kind restaurant will be perfect for Hanukkah. Not only are all of the menu items kosher, but even the treats from the bakery are also pareve (non-dairy)! You can dine in their beautiful space or order catering. Check out their website and think about trying their “famous” jelly donuts! Located on 1372 Lamberton Drive, Silver Spring, MD 20902.
Charbar – After its relocation and rebranding, the restaurant, formerly known as Eli’s, now has incredible food, a great atmosphere, and some very positive reviews. Any of their kosher menu items will be wonderful for Hanukkah or any Jewish holiday. Though some kinks still need to be worked out, mainly service, Charbar is certainly on the rise. Located on 2142 L St NW, Washington, DC 20037.
Loeb’s NY Deli – If you are looking for some delicious kosher options and one of the closest options DC has to a New York deli, then think about trying Loeb’s. Though not all of their items are kosher, their piled high sandwiches and American-Jewish cuisine make it a great choice for you and your non-Jewish friends! Located on 1712 I St NW, Washington, DC 20006.
Shawarma Spot – If you are craving some delicious (and inexpensive!) shawarma in DC, then stop by Shawarma Spot. Though the food does not abide by kashrut, it is certainly a great alternative if you don’t keep kosher! The great menu and fun, modern décor would be perfect for the upcoming week or any night you’re craving Middle Eastern food! Located on 2418 18th Street NW, Washington, DC 20009.
Whether you cook at home or try one of these restaurants, we hope you have a wonderful eight days of Hanukkah. Enjoy your time with family and friends and make sure they all get enough to eat! Chag Chanukah Sameach!
