DJ ThaKidQuest: Can you share a bit about your roots in the DMV area and how it has influenced your music?

Von Dre:
I’m a born and raised Washingtonian. I have lived in all 4 quadrants, meaning I’ve been in North West, North East, Southwest as well as South East. City life is fast paced and really close knit meaning that it’s easy to crash out if you don’t know how to maneuver. I used a little of the hustle and Swagg I learned uptown and mixed that with  the finesse awareness that I gathered from living in the south side and combined the two to form what you see today.

DJ ThaKidQuest: Were there any specific artists or influences that motivated you to start rapping?

Von Dre:
My motivation to create comes from people like Lil Wayne, Ja Rule, Usher and Drake. All of them were pioneers in some way shape and form like we all know Lil Wayne was one of the biggest influencers in the rap game from his sound to his raw approach on metaphors and hustler music. Ja rule was Drake before Drake but Drake came and took it a level up to where you didn’t have to be restricted to just rap or just hip hop but you could thrive and do whatever you feel when it comes to the art of music and emotions. Usher was the one who made me fall in love with being able to sing and dance. He was my rendition of Michel Jackson.

DJ ThaKidQuest: How do you infuse your personal experiences or the culture of the DMV into your music?

Von Dre:
To me music is life. My music happened to be my therapy so I use every situation I go through whether good or bad and turn it into art because I know whatever I may be feeling or whatever experience I may be having someone else may not have the same exact one but there is definitely someone who has a similar situation that can resonate with me. I try to make real life music.

DJ ThaKidQuest: What challenges did you face when starting in the rap game, and how did you overcome them?

Von Dre:
The biggest challenge in starting out in the rap game is getting people to believe in you and actually support you and your dream. It’s easy to get fake love but I’m talking about the real thing. No one really buys into your dream especially in the area where we come from being from the DMV. The people in your everyday circle will find every excuse not to support you or help push you forward. It’s not until you get to a certain point that others act as if they got your back or want to see you win. You get more love from strangers in this world than those in your own circle.

DJ ThaKidQuest: Can you discuss a turning point or moment that solidified your passion for pursuing rap as a career?

Von Dre:
I have been rapping and imitating radio stations since I was a child. I started rapping when most kids were playing with action figures. I knew since then that I was out here to do music. It was just too easy to make music out of my emotions and the way I could paint pictures with my words as a kid was so fluent and easy that I knew then what I wanted to do and what I was out here for.

DJ ThaKidQuest: How do you balance staying true to your authentic self while also adapting to the evolving rap scene?

Von Dre:
It’s easy to lose yourself in this game trying to keep up with the Jones but when your family are the Jones it always felt like the game was catching up to me and I was before my time. When you original and a trail blazer and never been a follower but always been a leader and trend setter it’s easy to just continue to be that way. I’m not here for a few moments but I’m here for a lifetime because I give you my life and this is all about accolades, respect and longevity.

DJ ThaKidQuest: Are there specific messages or themes you aim to convey through your music, especially reflecting your DMV roots?

Von Dre:
The themes I present in my music or the hidden gems are always hard work pays off. Stay true to yourself. Love yourself. Be happy in the skin you are in. Know that life is about love and relationships and as long as you have them you are not alone in anything you are going through. And the last one is daring to be different in a world where people are trying to be like everyone else. That way you separate you from the masses. God is love and love is key, stay sucker free and live the best life you can.
