DC Does it Right: A 4th of July Style Overview
As another holiday comes and goes, its time we take a look back at the trendy style seen on the streets of DC on Independence Day.
As another holiday comes and goes, it’s time we take a look back at the fashions seen on the streets of DC. Stars and stripes were the names of the game this 4th of July, and DC residents didn’t hold back on showing their patriotic flair. From parades to fireworks, there was no shortage of red, white, and blue to be seen. With sunny skies and a nice breeze, it was easy to go all out in your favorite summer patriotic apparel. High-waisted cut-off shorts were the most popular look, with some even featuring stars and stripes as the front pocket detail. Paired with a cute tank top or crop top, this look is easy to pull off across the board and show love for the US while still staying comfy and cool in the heat. Of course, dresses were also popular—stripes and bold hues of red and blue dominated the streets, with accessories like red, white and blue sunglasses worn to finish off the look. A new trend not seen so commonly before were American Flag leggings, with one leg featuring red and white stripes and the other white stars on a blue background. A little harder to pull off than, say, shorts and a t-shirt, but what is fashion without a few risk takers! Possibly my favorite trend of the day were the hair accessories—bows, barrettes, and headbands, which really pulled patriotic outfits together and gave them some extra flair. While accessories are of course a must when completing any look, using them to enhance your favorite BBQ or parade attire is perfect when pairing them with a themed look. By using hair accessories like bows and bandanas, it’s easy to take classic hairstyles and kick them up a notch. Stars and stripes bows added to ponytails and braids, sparkly barrettes in patriotic colors, and bandanas worn as headbands in red and blue were popular picks. Not a bad idea with this heat! And of course, we can’t forget the men, who kicked up the typical DC “preppy” look of khakis and brown Sperry’s with red, white and blue ones, and even a few American flag muscle tanks for good measure. With a gorgeous display of fireworks over the National Mall, combined with this year’s best looks, it’s hard to beat a 4th of July celebration in the nation’s capital.
